Best Torrent Sites for 2020

Best Torrent Sites

Torrenting is hugely popular, despite the rise of online streaming platforms. But finding a reliable torrent site is difficult.

Not only do torrent sites have to dodge “copyright police,” but many are also riddled with viruses and ads.

For both of these reasons, you need to be extremely careful when torrenting. Piracy (the unauthorized distribution of copyrighted material) is a crime and can get you in a lot of legal trouble.

And viruses don’t only result in unusable 1/10 torrents, but malicious files that infect your computer.

While we do not condone or encourage any illegal activity, torrenting has legal applications too, such as updating your Blizzard Entertainment games. Be sure to check out our ‘Is Torrenting Illegal‘ guide.

So if you’re going to torrent, make sure you do so safely.

How to Torrent Safely

Before even thinking about clicking that magnet link, you need to take every precaution to protect yourself.

The first step is having a reliable, updated anti-malware program installed on your device (we recommend Bitdefender Internet Security).

And before you connect to your torrent client, make sure you’re using a reliable, torrent-friendly VPN. Here’s a quick checklist:

  • P2P (Tor) connections supported
  • Strict no-logs policy
  • 256-bit encryption
  • Automatic kill switch
  • DNS leak protection
  • High-speed connection
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • Lots of servers
  • OpenVPN protocol
  • 24/7 customer support (live chat preferred)
  • Preferably not located in a 5 Eyes, 9 Eyes, or 14 Eyes jurisdiction (The British Virgin Islands, Panama, and Romania are 3 of the best countries for a VPN)

Later in this guide, we’ll give you some solid recommendations for a torrent VPN, so stick around!

Best Torrent Websites

Preparing a list of the best torrent websites isn’t an easy task. While a lot of torrent sites were taken down, there are still a lot of mediocre and fake ones out there.

That said, there are a few well-founded torrent sites proven to be consistent over the years. And private torrent sites are a torrenter’s best friend – we made sure to include a few of them in our list too!

A quick note on private torrent sites before we begin: they require registration (which is usually highly limited and might even be accompanied by an interview) and/or invitation by an existing member.

They might also have a Seed/Leech ratio requirement.

Keep an eye on Opentrackers, TorrentInvites, /r/trackers, and /r/invites if you want to gain access to a private torrent site.

The Best VPNs for Torrenting

As mentioned earlier in this guide, if you’re going to be torrenting, you need the best VPN with all the best features.

You also need to be careful with the recommendations and “reviews” all over the internet.

Most VPN comparison sites abuse the use of affiliate marketing to praise dodgy VPNs that pay them, like PureVPN (who gave user data to the FBI).

We’ve done a full article on The Best Torrenting VPNs, which we recommend taking a look at for all the details. In the meantime, here’s a sneak peek at our top 5 recommendations:

Conclusion

It’s clear torrents are far from dead – in fact, they’re becoming more popular again in recent years. (Maybe thanks to cutting wires and geo-restricted content?)

While there are several excellent torrent sites you can rely on for the best experience, we must stress doing so without a VPN is a huge security risk, even if you only plan on downloading legal content.
